Elephant leather is without argument THE most durable of all "soft" leathers. In the wild an elephant's hide protects the animal from some very hostile conditions. Can you imagine what you or I would look like if we tried to crash and tear through a thicket of thorns,in the buff no less ? An Elephant will make it out without a scratch every time. .Historically African warriors made shields out of the hides effectively stopping an opponents arrows.Have you ever seen a round from an "Elephant Gun" ?Tanning takes the hide one step further, and makes it even more durable. We Specialize in Supplying Genuine African Elephant Hides. Each Hide is Conservation Friendly, And Every 1/4 Comes Fully Tagged With Its Own Government Permit Information. A Part of The Money Returns to Help Fund the Elephant's Own Conservation, That Portion of Money is Used to Help Fund & Support National Wildlife Parks in Africa. And Also Multiple Other Elephant Conservation Program Efforts In Africa As Well. You Can Rest Assured, Each and Every Hide Comes From 100% Legitimate Sources.

CONSERVATION TOPICS : QUESTION ; Will the elephant hide auctions in Zimbabwe, and the possibility of future hide sales in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia stimulate elephant poaching?
TRAFFIC research in the past has failed to uncover any linkage between elephant poaching and a trade in elephant hides. The logistical challenges in removing commercial-quality hides from illegally-killed animals are substantial. There is no evidence to suggest that elephants are being poached anywhere in their range to support an illegal trade in hides. The value of hides is considerable and their legal sale would generate significant funds for elephant conservation and management. It has been suggested that South Africa alone could earn US $1 million annually from hide sales. The international market for hides has rebounded with the average price increasing by 76% per kg at Zimbabwe’s December 1999 sale over the first elephant hide auction held 18 months earlier. For more details, see TRAFFIC Bulletins Vol. 15 No. 1 (1994) and Vol. 17 No. 3 (1999).

LARGE PORTION OF FUNDS RETURNS TO SUPPORT CONSERVATION PROGRAMS: African elephant (Ansell (1974) recognizes four subspecies of African elephant of which L. a. africana occurs in the southern African subregion.) 1.7 Code numbers: 2. Utilization and trade 2.1 National utilization South African National Parks maintains a large stockpile of elephant products in the Kruger National Park (currently over 30 000 kg of raw ivory, and approximately 50 000 kg of hides). Most of this has been accumulated during past population control operations, and from elephants that have died of natural
causes. Within South Africa utilisation of elephant products is limited. Hides from the Kruger National Park is sold to local dealers who tan and die these hides and then export almost 60% of the worked leather and leather goods. The rest of the leather is used to manufacture bags, shoes and other leather products but these have a limited market in South Africa. The biggest market for these leather goods is outside South
Africa. 2.2 Legal international trade For the period 1989 (CoP7) to 2000 (CoP11), the South African population elephant was listed on Appendix I, and therefore no legal commercial international trade in elephants or elephant products (ivory or hides) was allowed. However, this population’s status was changed at CoP11 when it was transferred to Appendix II under the condition that no international sales of ivory
would be undertaken before CoP12. Following the outcome of CoP11 a total of 50 000 kg of elephant hide from the Kruger Park stockpile were sold during 2001/2002 by tender. The successful bidder, the Eastern Cape Company, Exotan, paid a total of R2.56 million for the seven lots of hides making up the total of 50 000 kg. Prices varied between lots from R32.80 per kg to R65.60 per kg. The total quantity of hides sold amounts to roughly one third of Kruger Park’s stockpile (a limit of 50 000 kg was set so as not to over-supply the market. In 2002/2003 a further 50 000kg of elephant hide were sold. When the company exported some of the leather goods in early 2003 they were informed that South Africa could no longer sell leather goods for commercial purposes as the proposal accepted at CoP12 stated trade in leather goods was for non-commercial purposes only. This created a problem for
the local companies who manufacture leather goods from elephant hides, as they could no longer export these products for commercial purposes. This has a profound impact on the economy of the country and subsequently
also on the biodiversity conservation community. The current proposal therefore proposes that the conditions attached to the Appendix II listing of the South Africa population of Loxodonta africana reflects the conditions relating to trade in leather goods as adopted at CoP11 and thereby rectifying the situation inadvertently created at CoP12.E. Summary South African National Parks has accumulated a large stockpile of elephant products in the
Kruger National Park since the transfer of the African elephant to Appendix I in 1989 (currently over 30 000kg of raw ivory, and over 50 000kg of hides). Most of this has been acquired during past population control operations, and from elephants that have died of natural causes. The record keeping and database comply with CITES specifications. Within South Africa utilization of elephant products is limited. Hides and ivory from the stockpile in the Kruger National Park are occasionally sold to local dealers. The gradual reduction in South African government funding of SANParks has left the organization suffering from budgetary deficiencies which could be considerably redressed should the current legal stockpile of ivory be sold. Revenues from the sale would all be used in the interests of elephant conservation.

TANNERY FINISHING CHART:
Leather Type Identification
Aniline) ELEPHANT OPTION # 1 Beautiful crusted colors. Finishing is fully negotiable as is coloring. Your only need to provide color sample. Tannery data & Coloring specs Aniline leathers are top quality natural leathers
in which the actual surface grain markings of the true
leather (hide) are visible. They have very little or no protective
treatments applied. Natural leathers can be classified
as Natural, Pure, & Un-Protected and are usually
colored with a transparent leather dye. A variety of clear
finishes such as oil, wax, nitrocellulose and urethane
protective coatings, which do not inhibit the softness or
breathing of leather, are applied to the surface. These
finishes allow the natural leather markings to show through
the finish. Aniline leathers require different cleaning
procedures than protected leather due to its porous nature.
Aniline leather is prone to sun fading.
Identifying characteristics: very easy to
scratch; water drops will darken the color and then dry back
to natural color.
Pigmented/Protected/Top Coated/Painted ELEPHANT OPTION #2 Pigment, TOP Coat. Incredibly rich, and classy leather. This is truely the most beautiful leather there is period. You won't be disappointed. Custom Colors, and Finish options. Same as Aniline. This is the most common leather type used in furniture,
approximately 90% of the market. This leather has a
uniform appearance and color. The leather has an intense color and
a definite pattern (grain). You cannot see any natural leather
markings through the top coatings, because a pigmented leather
paint coat is applied to the surface. It is then sealed
with a durable finish. Properly maintained, this finish will
provide years of cleaning ability and durability.
Identifying characteristics: uniform
color and grain patterns; will not scratch easily; water drops
will not change color.
NuBuck These are natural Aniline leathers that have
been surface brushed or buffed on the grain side of the leather
creating a nap and leaving a texture similar to velvet (softess
of all leathers to the touch). Usually Nubuck has a natural
finish, but may have a light protective coat and a transparent
leather dye for color. This process increases the
leathers surface exposure making it extremely absorbent to
body oils and soil, and difficult to clean effectively.
Identifying characteristics: very soft to
the touch, will scratch or scuff very easily; water drops will
darken the leather but it returns to its original color after
drying.
